BufWiki Guide for Teachers & Students
Introduction
|
|
The Buffalo Wiki, aka BufWiki, can be a useful instructional and learning tool. However, it is an open, freely editable wiki with some important issues for classroom uses. We welcome students and teachers to BufWiki and hope it can grow into an important learning tool. We ask teachers to please consider the material presented in this guide, along with other BufWiki and WikiSpot documentation prior to making any class assignments related to editing on BufWiki. |
Content
The Buffalo Wiki is a guide and community resource specific to Buffalo, NY. Pages appearing on BufWiki must have some direct relevance to our purpose. They must be of or about Buffalo. We support a wide range of Buffalo related topics about organizations, business, government, education, history, geography, people, activities, and so forth. We encourage a little fun, such as our Fun Facts page, but again, about Buffalo, its people, places, groups and things.
If anyone wants a topic, just look at our Wanted Pages list !!!
Dynamic Content - BufWiki is a wiki, and as such is subject to editing by any registered user. The edits may expand the content, make spelling, grammar, or writing style changes, or eliminate material that is duplicative, advertising, spam, copyright infringement, etc.
User Pages
-
BuffaloBob - syntax ["Users/BuffaloBob"]
-
Users/Com336/Buffalo State College - a draft proposal for Buffalo State College
-
Users/BuffaloBob/BufWiki Class 101 - syntax = ["Users/BuffaloBob/BufWiki Class 101"] - an example of teacher's class page.
BufWiki allows users to create their own User page to share information about themselves, their interest in Buffalo, BufWiki, etc. For example, see:
Users may also create additional pages under their User page by appending "/Page Name" to their User Page name, for example:
BufWiki User pages are for projects related to the Buffalo Wiki or the user's work on behalf of BufWiki.
We direct users to our
WikiSpot, where they can create their own wiki within the WikiSpot guidelines. We also suggest looking into Google (
Groups,
Docs,...),
Yahoo Groups, BlogSpot, and social media sites for facilities to create user pages and documents for sharing on personal or other work projects.
Teachers
Privacy
BufWiki is a public web presence which is indexed by search engines and freely accessible to all. WikiSpot (our wiki host) provides information within the wiki on the IP Address of each contribution to the wiki. If you have concerns about privacy and security, please consider using other wiki services (especially the educator-oriented
PBWorks) that allow private and/or controlled access wikis. You may also create your own wiki in WikiSpot and use the administrator tools to manage access and editing privileges to individual pages.
Finally, consider that you, or the student, can transport material developed within other wikis or sites to BufWiki when completed by the student.
Controlling The Process
We ask teachers who make assignments regarding use of BufWiki (or any wiki) to take responsibility for controlling the process. BufWiki administrators and editors cannot take responsibility for student actions but are automatically enlisted in protecting the appearance and content of the Buffalo Wiki.
You may refer to BufWiki Class 101 - a BuffaloBobWiki example teacher page for a class. The ideas on the page could be implemented here on BufWiki or on other web or hardcopy forms.
Students
We welcome students to use BufWiki as a learning tool - either within the context of a classroom project or to exercise communication skills through sharing information and knowledge about Buffalo and its environs.
Please remember, any material you place on BufWiki (even user pages) is automatically available to everyone under the Creative Commons licensing (see below). Further, anything not on your user pages is subject to review and editing by our other contributors (they can edit it but generally should not). This can be a great learning experience for you - or a frustrating experience (:>)
